Where would someone ever get the idea that money could buy Christ’s approval or blessing?

When I typed that question out, it felt like a ridiculous question… however, what is the motive behind our giving?  Do we give out of obligation?  Do we give because of tradition?  Do we give because we think if we do, that God will bless us?  I’ve had so many conversations with people that, in a round about way, said the latter.  If I’m honest, I’ve been there too.  I wanted to do the right thing, but I also felt like God was gonna give me the “hook-up” because I was “generous”.

In Acts 8, Simon, who was just rescued from a life of demon oppression, was very blatant that he wanted to buy power of the Holy Spirit.  Peter called him out immediately with this response:  18When Simon saw that the Spirit was given at the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money 19and said, “Give me also this ability so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.20Peter answered: “May your money perish with you, because you thought you could buy the gift of God with money! 21You have no part or share in this ministry, because your heart is not right before God.

It’s imperative that we worship Christ with our giving in the right attitude.  God doesn’t accept bribes!  Wether giving money, or ourselves, remember that giving is meant to be a way by which we can worship Christ.
